NoteView has a built-in MIDI driver which will by default send MIDI Playback data throught the modem port. You can change the MIDI settings for the port and/or interface speed using the "MIDI Driver Setup" command (in the Play menu).
If you prefer, you may switch NoteView to use the Apple MIDI Manager™ either permanently, or any time you start NoteView up for that run only: see instructions below.
Which should you choose? If you want “through-speaker playback” (again, see the separate Help topic), you must use MIDI Manager. Also, NoteView’s built-in MIDI driver seems not to work well with the MIDI TimePiece II interface, so you may have no choice but to use Apple MIDI Manager. Otherwise, we recommend built-in MIDI: it’s less complex and less hassle.
With the built-in MIDI driver, you can change the settings for the port and/or interface speed with the ‘MIDI Driver Setup’ command (in the Play menu). With MIDI Manager, you change port settings and interface speed via PatchBay instead. Notice that the choice of a port for NoteView is important since, when you use it, you may well have a port connected to the Internet via modem! This is somewhat more of a problem with MIDI Manager than with built-in MIDI because MIDI Manager wants to grab a port when you launch NoteView; built-in MIDI wants the port only when you tell it to play something.
Note: NoteView's built-in MIDI driver is compatible with the Opcode Studio 5 MIDI Interface, provided you do the following:
1. Go to NoteView's Play menu and select the MIDI Driver Setup command.
2. Choose the "Fast" setting, and then click on [OK].
3. In the Studio 5 controls, go to the Compatibility setup command and choose 1mhz.
If you do use MIDI Manager, be sure that it and PatchBay are properly installed (see “MIDI Manager Instructions” below).
Note: the Apple MIDI Driver is also required for normal use with MIDI Manager, but so-called “through-speaker playback” is a different situation (see “Using QuickTime for Through Speaker Playback” below).
----------------------------------------------
Selecting a MIDI Driver
You can override NoteView’s default MIDI driver whenever you start NoteView. To do this:
1) Launch NoteView, and wait for the opening “splash” screen (a logo and general information about NoteView) to appear.
2) As you click on the [OK] button, press the Shift key and hold it down.
3) A small dialog appears; in it, indicate your choice for the MIDI driver.
To choose which MIDI driver NoteView uses by default, you must use a resource editor. We know of two: Resorcerer, from Mathemaesthetics, Inc. (PO Box 298, Boulder CO 80306; phone (303) 440-0707; FAX (303) 440-0504; resorcerer@aol.com); and ResEdit, from Apple Computer. We recommend Resorcerer: it’s easier to use and much better supported than ResEdit, as well as more powerful. However, it’s also much more expensive, and the change you need to make to select a MIDI driver is very simple.
Using your resource editor, open the file ‘NoteView Prefs’ in the Preferences folder inside your System folder. (NoteView creates this file the first time you run it; if it doesn’t exist, just start NoteView, then immediately quit.) Then open the ‘CNFG’ resource in that file. Look for an item with the label “0=if MIDI Manager available, use it...”. This item should initially have the value 102, which tells NoteView to always use its built-in MIDI driver. To use MIDI Manager instead, you can set the item to 0, as it says. You might prefer 101: this tells NoteView to use MIDI Manager if it’s available, but if not, to use its built-in driver.

Using QuickTime® for Through Speaker Playback
NoteView users can have through speaker playback on the Macintosh via QuickTime® (System 7.x required). This is accomplished using a free software extension called MIDI QT™, which is provided with NoteView (in the Playback Drivers folder). MIDI QT™ connects to NoteView through the Apple MIDI Manager and its PatchBay control panel. These are also provided free of charge with NoteView. Complete instructions for the use of MIDI QT are provided with that program in its own folder.
To use MIDI QT:
1) Be sure that you have QuickTime 2.0 in your Extensions folder. You MUST use at least version 2.0 of QuickTime: earlier versions will not work.
2) Be sure that the Apple MIDI Manager and PatchBay™ are properly installed. NOTE: The specific file named “Apple MIDI Driver” is NOT required for through-speaker playback and, in fact, if it’s present, your ports may be left in an incorrect state after you quit NoteView. So it’s better to leave it out or, if it’s already present, remove it from your System Folder.
3) Drag the MidiQT Demo program onto the icon of the closed System Folder and restart your computer.
4) Launch NoteView and choose a NoteView score to view (or select [Cancel] to view no score at the moment).
5) Select PatchBay from the Apple menu. Icons for both QuickTime and NoteView will appear.
6) Draw a connection from the “output” triangle of NoteView to the “input” triangle of QuickTime.
7) Close PatchBay. Playback from NoteView will now be heard through the Mac’s audio system.
How to obtain QuickTime
If you do not have QuickTime 2.0, Musicware can provide it and QuickTime Musical Instruments along with NoteView free of charge to its customers. However, this is possible only when NoteView is distributed on disk: according to Apple’s regulations, Musicware may not distribute QuickTime over the Internet. NoteView users who do not already own QuickTime 2.0 can also download it for a small fee from the following addresses:
- CompuServe: Go: QT_MAC
- WWW: http://quicktime.apple.com (go to: Ordering Info/Get QuickTime Now!)

MIDI Manager Instructions for NoteView
These instructions are arranged in the following sections:
• About MIDI Manager
• Copying the Extras folder
• Installing MIDI Manager (System 7.x)
• Installing MIDI Manager (System 6.x)
• Using MIDI Manager
• Configuring PatchBay
• Using PatchBay
These instructions are included to help you install and use MIDI Manager, and should not be considered the final authority on MIDI Manager’s installation and operation. The PatchBay Help file includes graphic instructions which may clarify these written instructions.
ABOUT MIDI MANAGER
The MIDI Manager folder includes all the files you need to use MIDI Manager. Of these files, only three are required to run MIDI Manager: MIDI Manager, Apple MIDI Driver, and PatchBay. (You may choose to use the PatchBay™ application or the PatchBay.) The remaining items are PatchBay Help and Serial Switch. DA desk accesory.
MIDI MANAGER manages the MIDI information sent between NoteView (or other MIDI applications), the Apple MIDI Driver, and PatchBay.
APPLE MIDI DRIVER sends and receives the actual MIDI information from the computer through either theModem Port or the Printer Port. NOTE: IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO INSTALL THE SPECIFIC "APPLE MIDI DRIVER" FILE WHEN USING THROUGH SPEAKER PLAYBACK.
PATCHBAY (the application or the DA) links your MIDI applications with MIDI Manager by connecting the devices with a line onscreen from one program’s “Out” symbol to the Apple MIDI Driver’s (or another program’s) “In” symbol, much like connecting MIDI devices with cables. You must set up PatchBay for each MIDI application. NOTE: we recommend that you use the PatchBay™ application, not the desk accessory, with NoteView.
PATCHBAY HELP is useful when you want more information about PatchBay (Choose About PatchBay from the Apple menu). This file is not required.
SERIAL SWITCH is required for MIDI to be properly routed through the Modem or Printer ports with the Macinstosh IIfx or the Quadra 900 or 950 series. You do not need to install it for other Macintosh models, or when using through speaker playback.
INSTALLING MIDI MANAGER (System 7.x)
1) Open the MIDI Manager folder (provided with NoteView in the Playback Drivers folder) and drag MIDI Manager and Apple MIDI Driver ONTO the icon of the closed System folder, and then click [OK].
2) Drag the PatchBay™ application into the Apple Menu Items folder in your System folder.
3) Optional: Drag PatchBay Help into the Apple Menu Items Folder in your System folder. (Choose About PatchBay from the Apple menu to display information about PatchBay.) This file is not required.
4) Install Serial Switch if you use a Macinstosh IIfx, Quadra 900 or 950. (Serial Switch is not required for other Macintosh models.) To install, drag Serial Switch onto the icon of the System folder, and then click [OK].
INSTALLING MIDI MANAGER (System 6.x)
We highly recommend that you run your computer in MultiFinder mode for MIDI Manager to work most easily. We also recommend that you use the PatchBay™ application, not the Desk Accessory, because the Desk Accessory lacks features available in the application. Note that these instructions refer to the PatchBay™ application only.
1) Quit all applications that you’re running.
2) Open the MIDI Manager folder (provided with NoteView in Playback Drivers folder) and drag MIDI Manager and Apple MIDI Driver INTO the System folder. Do not place them inside any other folder inside the System folder.
3) Drag the PatchBay application into your System folder. (If you prefer, you may install the PatchBay DA in your System file using Font/DA Mover.)
4) Optional: Drag PatchBay Help into your System folder. (Choose About PatchBay from the Apple menu to display information about PatchBay.) This file is not required.
5) Install Serial Switch if you use a Macintosh IIfx, Quadra 900 or 950. (Serial Switch is not required for other Macintosh models.) To install, drag Serial Switch into your System folder.
SETTING NOTEVIEW TO USE MIDI MANAGER
1) Restart your Macintosh after you’ve installed the MIDI Manager files, according to the instructions above.
2) Launch NoteView, and wait for the opening "splash" screen to appear (which describes Noteview)
3) Press and hold down the Shift key as you click on the [OK] button
4) Click on the [MIDI Manager] button.
Now that you’ve told NoteView to use MIDI Manager, you must now run PatchBay to set the MIDI port and the connections between the Apple MIDI Driver and NoteView. See “Configuring PatchBay,” and “Using PatchBay,” below.
CONFIGURING PATCHBAY
(If you are only using through speaker playback via QuickTime, skip ahead to "Using PatchBay for Through Speaker Playback" ).
1) Launch PatchBay. If you are using System 7, choose PatchBay from the Apple menu. (If you are using System 6, return to the Finder [do not quit NoteView], and double-click PatchBay™.)
You should see at least two icons: the icon on the left represents the Apple MIDI Driver; the icon on the right represents NoteView. If QuickTime 2.0 has been installed, it should also appear. If NoteView does not appear, follow the steps in “Using MIDI Manager,” above.
2) If you are using MIDI Playback/Recording through either the Modem or the Printer port, Double-click the Apple MIDI Driver icon.
The Apple MIDI Driver Settings dialog box appears in which you select which port(s) the Apple MIDI Driver should send and receive MIDI information.
NOTE: If you hear a beep when you double-click the icons, the DA was installed. Remove the desk accessory, and install the PatchBay™ APPLICATION according to the directions above, in “Installing MIDI Manager.” Repeat this step, and then continue with the steps below.
3) Click the “Port Enabled” checkbox that corresponds to the port you want to use. There are two choices (columns): click the left checkbox to use the Modem port; click the right checkbox to use the Printer port. Note that most people hook up their MIDI system through the Modem port, so that they can leave their printer connected.
You can also set your MIDI interface speed at this time, although most interfaces run at 1 MHz (the default setting). If your MIDI interface has more features, please refer to the instructions provided with the interface.
4) After you’ve selected the port you want to use for MIDI, click the Close box. Triangles now appear on each icon. These triangles, which represent MIDI inputs and outputs, point into or out of the icon. Applications often have two outputs, which work identically.
USING PATCHBAY FOR MIDI PLAYBACK
After you’ve configured PatchBay, you are now ready to make the “connections” which will enable MIDI to work for NoteView.
1) Draw a line from NoteView’s output (>) to the MIDI Driver’s input (>). Just click the output triangle on the left of the window, and drag to the input triangle on the right:
